Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Both characters face the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience today.
Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
