Senate Greenlights Legislation to Make Public Jeffrey Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday gave swift approval to legislation that will mandate the disclosure of case documents concerning the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by the president and his Republican allies. The administration gave in after months of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a case that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Approval in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a massive majority.

The public have been patient long enough. The survivors have waited long enough,” Chuck Schumer stated in a floor speech on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Future Action

The measure next heads to Donald Trump for his signature. He indicated on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Even though Trump has for months rejected the outcry over the official management of the investigation as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the measure over the weekend, and stated he would give his assent if it reaches his desk.

Support and Opposition

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their supporters who were seated in a viewing area, broke into applause after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from a GOP representative, who said he feared the measure would make public specific data of people, persons of interest and others involved in the investigation.
