Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Party

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a diverse cast of personalities, and a exciting storyline including celestial beings, evil spirits, and malevolent powers increasing in power within the urban setting.

Warning: Spoilers for the latest installment of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the initial group of heroes who will branch out from the central cast to embark on their own adventure, separate from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table includes Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given 13 cast members, it was evident from the start that keeping everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

That’s why, the initial installments of this story serve as an Prelude, connecting the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Warriors, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

Per the DM, the warrior group is for adventurers who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy story mode where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might look out of place, but the events of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

First, the party knows exactly where to head next after a intense first encounter with the antagonists.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—used the enemy for his own means, invading the secret base, attacking the character, and stealing all the powerful objects to sell off.

The antagonist then cleared his liabilities and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each character has a specific drive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as the companion and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • The adventurer has experience in the northern area and cautions that it is a hostile environment.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having disobeyed his house’s orders to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their status as important members in House Halovar could enable the party enter areas they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, The grateful character pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his salvation and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the powers that rule the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The rogue and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This leaves them few options but to travel to Timmony in search of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s follow-up content, we learn that the combat party won’t be around the following episode, leaving the rest of the participants to round up the Explorers and Planners tables.

Audiences can expect discovering which players will be in which group in the season’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
